I’m hibernating in this pandemic,
wandering from room to room.
Alexa wakes me up in the morning
and tells me, “Cheer up, pal,
spring training starts today.
Pitchers and catchers are due to report.”
My senses activate; my spirits soar,
and in my head I can hear
the crack of the bat, the whack of the glove.
I swear I can also smell the green grass.
I run to my computer.
Whom do they play opening day?
Who will be the starting pitcher?
It may be snowing outside,
but I now have my passport to spring.
My soul rises to meet
the dawning of a better day.
