VIOLET THRASHER

Girls are supposed to be
pretty, silly, and frilly.
Girls are supposed to be
pure, demure, and sure.
Well, I am none of these things.
In school, I sit and seethe.
In school, I write, and writhe.
I only become my true self
when I am on the volleyball court.
Then I kill, I spike, I smash, I strike.
The inside of me turns outward to reveal
my heart’s cutting edge,
my eye’s laser beam,
my hand’s lethal blow.
I want to win so bad that
I have to smash the ball down your throat.
I want to hurt you so bad
you won’t ever get up off the floor.
Yeah, I’m a girl, but if you treat me like one,
I’m gonna wipe the floor with you.
