Every spring, in every camp,
there is always the Phenom,
one obscure minor leaguer
who, in the warm sun,
takes off for new heights.
He has hit three home runs
in seven plate appearances,
and the reporters covering are quick
to call him the next big thing.
Like a rocket, will he
continue to soar, hit his target
of making the major league club,
or will he flame out, fall back
into the obscurity of the minors
and the smaller American cities?
Hopes of family and friends
ride on every pitch he sees,
and only the Baseball Gods
know what his fate will be.
For the moment, though,
the decision of going up
or going down seems to hang
in the air, like a high flY to right.
