ON THE VERGE OF OPENING DAY

All around me
the world tumbles in turmoil:
war in Ukraine,
mass shootings in the U.S.,
storms, both political and natural,
– all stories that lead the evening news.
And I’m not doing too well myself.
Body parts conspire to make
known their aggrieved condition,
deadlines, like taxes, approach
with fierce and undeniable certainty,
familiar family squabbles on-going,
– all stories that will never make
the evening or any other kind of news.
But when I realize that baseball
will start for real in just a few days,
my spirit brightens, my hope soars,
I don’t feel so bad about myself.,
thought I still have concerns
about the rest of the world.
