Many a brilliant hitter has slid beneath the wind
Or been absorbed beneath the surface of quick
Sand or, like his personal hands, closed in on
Some last inning’s mistake, or latched on to
An error the outfielder missed while running
Against the wind, trying to catch the last ball
And put the last man out.
