STAR TREK CONNECTION

It is a murky future century, but one thing is baseball clear:
The sport we love has survived and even thrived and is
Very much alive. What follows is the double evidence:

Watch an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation titled
“Evolution” and you will hear an archaeological reference
To a treasured baseball game held on October 3, 1951,
A gladiator match between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the
New York Giants, with the winner awarded a World Series
Opportunity to face the greatest team in the universe at that
Time, twice-defending all-world champions, the New York
Yankees. Historical allusions are made to the hurler Branca
And the batter Thomson, the latter representing the second
Out or the winning run in the final phase of the game.
You have heard about “The shot heard ‘round the universe”
And the evil Yankee sequential conquering of the Giants in
The Series/ It must have made the front page of the popular
Newspaper with the greatest inter-planetary circulation,
Universe Today.

Still unconvinced? Watch Season 7, Episode 4 of Star Trek:
Deep Space 9, called “Take Me Out to the Holosuite” and
You will witness a baseball game between the crew of the
Space station (Earthlings, Bajorans, Ferengi) and the
Arrogant, obnoxious Vulcans, with the changeling Odo as
The umpire. You will better comprehend Captain Sisko’s
Deep attachment to that baseball with its affectionate
Location on the desk of the station’s commander.

The Star Trek franchise is as American as baseball!
It is patently obvious that our beloved sport is both
Figuratively and literally out of this world!
