I COME TO THE GAME

– May 20, 2012

They’ve chopped down every tree I love
on this property. The pines, the oaks,
the sassafras trees. They’ve cut down
the holly bushes. They’ve even cut
down the oak that stood on the front
lawn of the front house.

I can find no purpose in this. Nothing
reasonable. The violence against the
earth is painfully stunning. For three
days while they mutilated the property
I slept poorly, filled with anxiety.

Finally, today, they are gone. At
least for now.

I come to the Yankees – Reds game
for peace, for solace. I watch Frazier,
the Reds third basemen, who played
against my older son in high school
and with him on an all star team.
I’m happy for the first time in
three days.
