ANTHEM AT THE GAME

Anthem at The Game – By Quinn Weithman
(Golden Shovel of ‘Casey at the Bat’ by Ernest Lawrence Thayer)

“Gave through the night, that our flag was still there Oh,”
how children hum along somewhere
in the crowd of thousands. In
a stadium that brings millions together this
song is favored
throughout this land.
We hear and acknowledge the
brave soldiers fighting under the sun.
Baseball fans stand up and place their right hand on their hearts. Is
this song known around the nation Shining
Still? As Bright?

The turf down below is where you can find the
quiet hum of the national band.
Are they still playing? Is
the joy of music still thriving as they play?
Patrons listen states away at a lonely bar somewhere.
Far away they hear the tune for the nation and
many hear the smooth voice of the singer somewhere.
It feels like heaven, the hearts
thrum to the sound, ‘Are
they that light?’

It asks and
they answer somewhere.
‘Yes’, we men and women
cry and enjoy the sounds that are
coming from the singer on the screen. Momentarily pausing their laughing,
from an old memory with a couple of friends and
even children
at a restaurant look at the TV, wonder when fans stomp and shout.
