GEORGE WRIGHT

We earned a very good living for the time
when we toured the country back in ’69,
but I don’t think any of us except maybe Harry
dreamed how big baseball, and then other sports,
would become in our lifetime, to say nothing of afterward
I did my best to help that come about,
not only during my playing days,
and not only for baseball:
I designed the first public golf course in the United States
I founded a sporting-goods company
I fathered two sons who became tennis champions
I was involved in demonstrating baseball
in the 1912 Olympics
I was involved in the creation of the Hall of Fame
And I lived long enough to be inducted there,
though I died before the first ceremony in ’39
