UNDERDOG

The term, coming from when they
held dog fights in the19th century,
the winner was called”top dog,”
and the unfortunate loser
was labeled as the “underdog”.
Today, the name is more cuddly.
We want to root for the underdog;
we want to be the underdog,
the person who has climbed up
from the bottom to reach the top.
Favorites are so boring.
Did anyone root for the Baltimore Colts,
or did we root for Joe Namath to win?
Did anyone root for the Baltimore Orioles,
or did we want the upstart Mets to win?
So today, when I watch the Super Bowl,
though I have no attachment to Ohio,
I will be rooting for a Bengals win,
just because they are called, “the underdogs.”
