ON WINNING

When my team has won four in a row,
there is little doubt I acutely feel the joy.
When my team has shut out its opponent,
why do I refuse to be shut up inside,
stepping sprightly out into the sunlight?
When my favorite ball player goes 4 for 4,
why do I feel I could play in the major leagues?
I control the tides.
I control the wind.
I have great influence over
what friends and family are wont to do.
There is much of my fate I am master of.
Shouldn’t I receive some major credit
for my longtime loyalty?
Shouldn’t my years of faithful allegiance
be rewarded by a string of victories.
C’mon guys, belt out a win.
I can’t wait for the playoffs to start.
My life has a whole long season to run.
