NEARLY 40 YEARS

In Biblical times,
Jews trooped through
the desert for 40 years.
I think I know how dry they felt.
It’s been nearly 40 years
since my beloved Mets
won their last World Series.
I cannot afford the time
to wait another 40 years.
I need a world championship
right now, this year or next.
The players may be competing
in a kids’ game,
but it’s I who is growing
older by the minute
What can I do
to provoke my Mets
to play with a certain urgency?
Can’t I speed things up a bit?
Don’t they know I am
running out of innings?
