IKE DAVIS, AGAIN

The pendulum swings –
last year he was batting .143,
a poem and a baseball lifetime ago.
This year, he hit a walk-off
grand slam home run in the team’s
fifth game of the season.
The baseball gods taketh away,
and they also giveth – occasionally.
Life, too provides the roller coaster ride of baseball.
Rise, fall, with you crouching in the box awaiting
pitches that come at varying heights and speeds.
It’s important to note a really good hitter
fails seventy percent of the time.
So, I counsel myself to be patient,
a virtue I lack at the plate and elsewhere,
while remembering Ike Davis was hitting .143,
and this year won the game
with a most towering home run.
