THE DRAFT

The state university infielder, a top 10 pick,
dazzled with his .408 batting average,
stout defense and range.
He wowed with his sheer athleticism,
and resolute determination to never strike out.
Though undersized, his on-base percentage
was off the charts.

He made solid contact,
sprayed line drivers
everywhere.
Scouts claimed he might be
the best raw talent in the draft.

But some fans had the nagging fear,
deep in the pit of their
sunlit beer-slogged stomachs,
it was the last they’d ever hear of him.
