WALLS: A TRAVELOG

The Great Wall of China isn’t so great;
It’s old and it’s cold and it’s worn out its fate.
The Western Wall has seen many years
And continues to drown in a sea-full of tears.
Robert Frost’s Mending Wall keeps falling apart;
It’s the object of arguments and no work of art.

If you want to acknowledge what a great wall should be,
Go no further than Fenway, and there you will see
Our affectionate Monster, standing tall and all green.
Travel over the world and you’ll find it obscene
That others will brag about their local wall
When Boston’s Green Monster rises well above all!

How many of these tall pretenders have reason
To brag and to boast each new baseball season
That they have been honored to watch Red Sox history?
That they dare to compare to the Monster’s a mystery.
Thirty-seven feet high, so proud and erect – – –
This green wall above all commands our respect!

So next time you feel the urge to explore
The world’s greatest structures, let me implore
You to visit 4 Jersey Street, home of the king
Of all wondrous walls; it’s a beautiful thing
To behold and be told its glorious story.
The Green Monster stands high in all of its Glory!
