JACKIE

Post WW2 and
a new day for
“organized” baseball,
a young black
Negro League all-star
was signed by
the Brooklyn Dodgers,
but first, a stint
with the AAA
Montreal Royals.
I was twelve
years old and
selling refreshments
at the old Toronto
Maple Leaf stadium.
All eyes were
on the field
when the Royals
came to town.
Jackie was the
focus of our
attention.
I can’t remember
who won or lost,
but baseball
had changed.
