LATE AUGUST BASEBALL (AS MY TEAM FADES)

Tough times for a young team
pitches miss by ever so much, flatly

fly balls land just beyond outstretched
gloves, misjudged blunders run

faster than caught baserunners
batters take down the middle,

and ever fewer score in fizzled,
wilted games away from home

as remaining days dwindle
from months to weeks,

innings mount, seasons move,
bats clatter for the other team,

four or five outs given in the field
lead our boys away from first place

away from October games
back to our old baseball dreams

for newer, fresher arms, greater
acuities, preparedness, being

placed in slowed down moments
when youth plays young and old

both, on grass, in the field
and so on…
