The Mets were playing the Marlins in Citi Field
And it seemed to be raining – again.
But that was supposed to happen later!
Didn’t the sky gods know there was an important
Baseball game in progress?
Some of the folks in attendance had pulled
Up their hoodies or opened umbrellas and others just
Stood up and were leaving their seats – perhaps not
Yet ready to leave the stadium because it was not
Supposed to rain until later! The Mets were leading
4-0 and the drizzle was persistent – would their efforts
Be for naught? The game was not yet official.
So much this summer has been called off – one
Rainy washout after another
I loved one stand-out Van Gogh umbrella but not the downpour
In full swing, emptying the stands of fans but the
Players still were playing even as the rain ran down their
Helmets and they were running in slippery mud which can
Defeat the safety of the best cleats.
The announcers were mimicking weathermen trying to
Decipher the heavens.
Severino made the play and then there was a tv break.
We got back on the field watching the action – maybe the
drizzle was over – no that was not happening.
The field was slippery and the rain fell harder.
The game became official, so that was progress.
One of the sportscasters philosophized about Noah’s Ark.
What happened to the sun in Central Park?
It was out there earlier!
The ground crew swept the ground
Trying their best to dry up the infield.
The fans were chanting and dancing in the stands,
Their rain ponchos making quite a fashion statement.
In the bottom of the sixth, I noticed another pink bat.
So many things have been changing lately, why not that?
Adapting in real time in sports as in life seems like a great idea,
Especially for optimists: the rain had stopped!
Fans were dancing the Macarena to Beatles music
Play ball!
Severino was still in at the top of the seventh inning and
Had given up no runs.
In the eighth inning, the score still favoring the Mets, 4-0
And that was the final score in the ninth
When Severino completed the game,
Shut out the other team.
Today’s version was a no-hitter
Severino really was brilliant!
The sky may not have shined
But he did.
