I’d always heard there’s a science to baseball
but I didn’t believe it till I saw it
happening right there on the field. The
scoreboard was empty. The teams in the
dugouts but there was something going
on … three men in black vinyl jackets with
a metal mock up of home plate. One had a
broom and swept the dirt and swept again.
He swept the outline of home base away.
One put the frame in place marking a line.
The third picked gravel out of the dirt and
once that was done, he swept the base.
All three lifted the frame moving it to
one side. Only one pushed the cart
making a white perfect straight line.
The whole thing was repeated two more
times till home base was restored intact.
I paid more attention to this than the game.
