TWO KIDS IN JOPLIN

We pointed the radio
Just the right way,
Twisted the knob
Until the buzz went away,

Leaned toward the speaker,
Straining to hear –
Then out of the ether
The names came clear.

Solly and Willard, Enos and Del,
Sisler, Bilko, Repulski, Mizell.

We sat transfixed,
As the spell was cast,
Envisioned each play
As the faces flew past.

Harvey and Alex,
Virgil and Fred,
One guy called Peanuts,
Two guys named Red.

We prowled the mound
With Harry the Cat,
Kicked up dust
With Eddie the Brat,

Living the dream
As only kids can,
Crouched in the box
With Stan the Man.
