BASEBALL

The music of spring is eternal harmony.
As I glance out the workroom window,

this morning a light breeze vibrates
the azaleas. The dark magnolia

in the background cannot disparage that.
Further off, clouds look like cotton

on a day that feels strictly polyester.
I remember I should be attending

the research conference at the Thompson
Center where the research scholars

are presenting findings that will
change life on the planet as we know it.

Still, the coffee in my cup is singing,
the dogs have stopped yelping in the yard.

I cannot help but feel something special,
something perhaps still very small,

about to happen, that may keep us all
occupied till the end of the season.
